Sensory Processing/Sensory Integration Strategies For Persons With Special Needs

The session will provide: (a) a foundational background of sensory processing and sensory integration, (b) recognition of symptoms associated with sensory integrative disorders, (c) an understanding of resources and professionals trained in addressing sensory integrative dysfunction, and (d) a discussion of basic strategies to facilitate maximal function in the home-work-school and community.

About the Instructor:

Kristine Haertl, Ph.D., OTR/L is a full time professor in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at the College of St. Catherine. She has over 20 years experience working with persons affected by serious mental illness, developmental disabilities, and dementia. Prior to 1997 she formally worked at the state psychiatric hospital in Anoka, Minnesota. Kristi has presented nationally and internationally and has authored several articles and textbook chapters related to meeting residential, mental health, and sensorimotor needs of clients. In 2005 Kristi received the Minnesota Occupational Therapy Association’s Research Award for “Excellence in Clinical Work, Teaching and Research in Mental Health.” Areas of expertise and research include mental health housing and treatment, sensory integration intervention, and strategies to maximize function in persons with developmental disabilities. In addition to faculty work, Kristi maintains a small private occupational therapy practice and has taught group fitness classes for the past 24 years.
