Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drug Abuse

The misuse and abuse of medication has significantly increased over the past 15 years. More people now report non-medical use of these drugs than abusing all other drugs except alcohol, tobacco and marijuana. We will examine how and why this has come about, which drugs are being abused, and suggestions and resources for preventing their abuse.

Objectives

  • Understand the prevalence of the non-medical use of prescription and over-the-counter drugs
  • Understand some of the changes in culture and policy that have led to the increase in the non-medical use of the products
  • Have an understanding of the products that are being used, how they are being used and the harm they can cause.

 

YOUR INSTRUCTOR:Jay Jaffee recently retired Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention Coordinator at the Minnesota Department of Health. He served in that position for 19 years. Previously he worked for 14 years in the substance abuse prevention field in schools and communities and worked and volunteered at a treatment program for two years before that.
