We all know that “one size does not fit everyone” in behavior management of clients but we are not always sure of the behavioral alternatives for various client needs.  This session will present an overview on behavioral strategies and methods to determine appropriate behavioral management techniques based on diagnosis, level of cognition, climate, and personal issues of the consumer.   A variety of behavioral, cognitive behavioral, sensory and environmental strategies will be presented in relation to clients with mental illness and developmental disabilities.

Kristine Haertl, Ph.D., OTR/L is a full time professor in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at the College of St. Catherine.  She has over 20 years experience working with persons affected by serious mental illness, developmental disabilities, and dementia. Prior to 1997 she formally worked at the state psychiatric hospital in Anoka, Minnesota.  Kristi has presented nationally and internationally and has authored several articles and textbook chapters related to meeting residential, mental health, and sensori-motor needs of clients. In 2005 Kristi received the Minnesota Occupational Therapy Association’s Research Award for “Excellence in Clinical Work, Teaching and Research in Mental Health.” Areas of expertise and research include mental health housing and treatment, sensory integration intervention, and strategies to maximize function in persons with developmental disabilities.
