Basic Sign Language

This 2-hour class is intended to teach some basic skills for any staff who are working with people who use sign language. The instructor will go over these categories of signs:

  • Alphabet
  • Basic Greetings
  • Beverages/Food
  • Yes/No/Wait
  • Activities of Daily living (shower, brush teeth)
  • Basic outings (van ride, appointment)
  • Days of the week/Tomorrow

Jo Wiseth is a designated coordinator for three residential homes that serve deaf adults with developmental disabilities. Jo has an A.A.S. degree in Human Services and has worked with people developmental disabilities for 35 years. For twelve of those years, she has worked strictly with people who are also deaf. Jo has taught sign language courses for Community Education in the Minneapolis School District for three years, as well as teaching functional sign language courses for various human service agencies.
